What Is The “Quantified Self”?

The Quantified Self is best described as a paradigm for improving our standard of living by using technology to capture, store, track, trend and report critical information about ourselves over time and using that information to bring about awareness and healthy change. For example, using a smart phone app to track the number of steps taken and calories burned in a typical day could help you better manage your exercise routines. There are countless other examples of data that can be collected about you from self monitoring or self-sensing devices from sleep patterns to bowel movements and just about anything in between. Calories consumed, U.V. exposure, Mood, Blood Pressure, O2 Levels, and on and on ..

Aircraft Systems Monitoring and The Quantified Self:  Using Data To Achieve Optimal Performance.

The Quantified Self Movement is about Monitoring your own body systems to maximize performance much like a pilot monitors aircraft systemsA modern jet aircraft has a number of critical systems that work together and a number of monitoring systems that report real-time, mission critical information to the Pilots. Pilots are trained to continually scan and make adjustments to these monitoring systems throughout the flight in response to changing altitudes, weather conditions, weight, etc. By knowing the optimal performance for that particular aircraft and monitoring system inputs, flight crews achieve optimal performance of each aircraft system and hopefully a safe, efficient on time arrival at it’s planned destination.

Consider your body and the multiple systems working together that keep you alive. Now, imagine having real-time visibility into the performance of your body’s critical systems on demand and being able to adjust your behavior (or whatever) based on readings you get from your own personal monitoring device or app? Just like pilots in command of a 777 make adjustments to optimize flight performance, you to could make adjustments during the day to maximum your own bodies performance as well.

Advances in mobile computing, and interactive application development have brought the concept of Quantified Self to center stage and a number of visionaries are working right now to bring this paradigm into our every day lives. Like the other emerging technology trends we monitor here, The Quantified Self Movement creates opportunity for investors, inventors, developers and entrepreneurs who share their vision of how self monitoring and the technology that enables it could change the health care industry and improve the lives of millions.

What Opportunities Will “The Quantified Self” and Self-Tracking Apps Create?

Now that you have a very basic understanding of The Quantified Self. You may want to take a moment and watch the video we have posted here Featuring Susannah Fox, Assoc. Director of Digital Strategy at Phew Research Center and leading reasearcher in the area of Technology and it’s impact on health care. In it Joyce Ho from Standford University’s MedicineX discusses Fox’s most recent research concerning self tracking of personal health information, shares some initial initial findings and discusses ideas and some concerns about the future of The Quantified Self movement and health care. If you’re trying to get a grasp on the application of this technology, it’s 12 minutes well spent as Ho and Fox well help drive home the concept of Self Tracking and set the stage for more discussion about the opportunity that lies before us.” width=”390″ height=”216″ title=”true”] Now that you have a very basic understanding of The Quantified Self.
